The moment you feel your vehicle losing traction — stop accelerating immediately. This is the number one mistake people make in beach recovery situations.

Assess the situation

It's tempting to jump straight into recovery mode — but 30 seconds of assessment can make all the difference to success.

  • Are you high-centred — is your chassis sitting on sand?
  • Are all tyres bogged, or just one side?
  • Is the tide coming in?

This tells you whether you need a quick traction fix or the full recovery kit.

Lower your tyre pressure

This is often the easiest and most effective fix in beach recovery. Reduce tyres to:

12 – 18 PSI

depending on your vehicle weight. Many vehicles will drive straight out after this step alone.

Dig and clear the sand

Before reaching for any recovery gear, grab your shovel:

  • Clear sand from under the chassis and diffs
  • Create a gentle ramp of sand in front of each tyre

Use recovery tracks

If lowering your tyre pressure wasn't enough, this is your next move. Recovery tracks are one of the most effective tools for solo beach recovery.

  1. Place them firmly under the driving wheels
  2. Angle them slightly upward toward the exit path
  3. Drive forward slowly — avoid wheel spin

Try a gentle recovery drive

With tyres deflated and tracks in place, it's time to drive out — carefully.

  • Engage low range if available
  • Accelerate slowly and steadily
  • Avoid sudden throttle inputs
Momentum — not power — is what gets you out of sand.

Use a snatch strap or kinetic rope

If you're still stuck and have another vehicle nearby, a snatch strap or kinetic rope recovery can get you out.

  • Attach to rated recovery points only
  • Use a gradual pull — not aggressive jerking
  • Maintain clear communication between both drivers
Never attach to tow balls or unrated points. This is a serious safety risk.

Use a winch as a last resort

If you're solo or seriously bogged, a winch recovery may be required. On beaches, anchor points are limited, but your options include:
